Resolving "Cannot activate; the parent stock area is deactivated" when reactivating a stock bin

Overview

When reactivating a discontinued stock bin from the Discontinued Stock Areas window, Everest shows "Cannot activate; the parent stock area is deactivated". Stock areas are hierarchical and a child bin cannot be activated while the stock area above it is discontinued. This article shows how to find the parent and reactivate the hierarchy in the correct order.

Information

Cause

Everest validates the parent stock area before activating a bin. Both the bin and its parent were discontinued, usually together.

Find the parent

  • In Everest: Inventory > Stock Areas > View > Discontinued, double-click the bin (or Options > Properties) and read the Parent Stock Area field.
  • In SQL (read-only):
    SELECT area_code, parent_area_code, dep_code, active
    FROM stk_area
    WHERE area_code = 'BIN_CODE';

Resolution (top-down)

  1. In the Discontinued Stock Areas window, select the parent stock area, then Options > Activate > OK.
  2. Select the bin, then Options > Activate > OK.
  3. If the parent itself returns the same message, repeat for its own parent, working from the top of the hierarchy down.

Only reactivate the parent and the bin you need. Sibling bins can stay discontinued.
